📣 SAVE THE DATE: Drexel Engineering is thrilled to welcome Steven E. Kern executive director of GH Labs, as he presents the Dr. Jeffrey S. Barrett '86 Endowed Lecture.🏥 "Catalyzing Innovation toImprove Healthcare in LowResource Settings"📅 Monday, May 6 | 2:30 p.m. | GHall 409ℹ Global Health Labs innovates to co-create solutions that reduce health disparities, especially in low- and middle-income countries. As a nonprofit innovation lab fully funded by Gates Ventures, GHL partners with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other cross-sector leaders to help develop health technology solutions with the people who need them most. Critical to success in this effort is a strong appreciation for the context into which the innovation is intended to work and constraints (technical, financial, cultural) that will affect its impact. Kern will discuss how we develop an appreciation for this context and understand these constraints to bring ideas forward for addressing healthcare challenges in low resource settings using examples from our current portfolio of work that includes novel diagnostic tests and AI innovations.

Fascinating read in The Guardian recently about the critical message delivered to Ministers regarding the UK's aspirations to become a science superpower. As we navigate the evolving landscape of scientific innovation, it's clear that the demand for lab space is reaching new heights. The call for increased lab space is not just a matter of expanding physical infrastructure; it's a strategic investment in the future of science and technology. Drug manufacturers play a crucial role in advancing healthcare so providing the necessary resources is fundamental to driving innovation. At AscellaHealth, we certainly support this development. I'm excited about the potential for growth and collaboration in the life sciences sector.https://lnkd.in/gDEuJmbK #AscellaHealth #LabSpace #DrugManufacturing #lifesciences

Moving scientific discoveries to patients requires the expertise and support of many groups. At “Innovating for Cures,” a recent event held at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, innovators, philanthropists and venture capital investors shared their thoughts on accelerating biomedical research advances to people with significant unmet medical needs.Benjamin Patz, managing partner of DeepWork Capital, manager of the #FloridaOpportunityFund, shared some encouraging statistics: 38,000 tech companies and more than 120 billion-dollar companies are based in #florida . Florida ranks fourth in the United States for total #technologyjobs , with over 440,000. Florida was also No. 1 in the nation in both 2021 and 2022 for new technology businesses established. Today, Florida universities invest more than $1.4 billion annually in life-science R&D, he noted.“We believe there’s an opportunity to invest here in Florida,” Patz said. The event was jointly sponsored by ; UF Innovate | Accelerate, the University of Florida’s technology licensing arm; and DeepWork Capital, a venture capital group that manages the Florida Opportunity Fund. In August, Dr. Carol Mimura -- University of California, Berkeley's assistant vice chancellor for Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) -- was featured in The Bayh-Dole Coalition's "Faces of American Innovation" report and awarded the inaugural American Innovator Award for her work to commercialize the Nobel Prize-winning drug Yervoy.UC Berkeley just published an article on Dr. Mimura that includes a first-person perspective on her inspiring personal journey and lifelong dedication to promoting innovation, as well as the important role that patent and licensing rights under the Bayh-Dole Act have played in her work!"In IPIRA, we obtain research funding, materials and data from industry to support Berkeley’s laboratory research. We patent inventions made at Berkeley and license them to companies for development into commercial products based on the inventions — and we support entrepreneurs and startup companies.""A portion of the proceeds from [immunologist James] Allison’s Nobel Prize-winning drug, Yervoy, were used at Berkeley to help build new biology teaching labs, augment animal use facilities, purchase research equipment and construct a building where the Innovative Genomics Institute was first established. It is there where the applications of Jennifer Doudna’s Nobel Prize-winning genome engineering discoveries, CRISPR, are being explored.""This is the cycle of discovery, translation and reinvestment into the research enterprise that the U.S. federal Bayh-Dole Act intended to foster when legislators crafted this law that gave universities the right to own the inventions they make using federal grants."https://lnkd.in/gfPS7SgK#BayhDole #techtransfer #research #science #technology #invention #innovation #patents #IP #inspiring
